“Toward a process-based, interpretative understanding of how collaborative groups deal with ICT interruptions”

  • Date: 10 May 2024
  • Time: 10 am – 11 am
  • Location: Maurice Keyworth 1.44 (Hybrid – Teams link below)
  • Speaker: Professor Virpi Tuunainen (Aalto University)

Abstract

In this seminar Professor Tuunainen will explore contemporary knowledge workers collaboration in hybrid work environment and how they deal with ICT interruptions. She investigates how do knowledge workers deal with such interruptions to ensure the smooth continuation of their collaboration? Previous studies, for the most part, suggest that interruptions are likely to negatively affect the process of collaboration, yet they’ve found that in many instances, knowledge workers continue to collaborate smoothly despite receiving ICT interruptions and even attending to them. In other words, ICT interruptions do not always discernibly affect the collaborative process. Using the concepts from Goffman’s work, she will offer a novel understanding of how group members can seamlessly handle ICT interruptions, avoiding and, in certain cases, recovering from serious disruptions in collaboration.
