Structure

The Academy is a charity which supports the initiatives proposed by its members. It conducts its work by means of task forces and special interest groups. These groups may be formed with the advice and consent of the Academy’s Board in accordance with the aims of the Academy.

All administration is the responsibility of the president. He or she will also chair the Annual General Meeting of the Academy. The Academy’s Board will consist of the President, Vice President (President Elect and Deputy) and eight elected members. The Board has the power to nominate suitable members in the capacity of Co-opted Board Member based on their expertise for a defined period.  The Board is responsible for all matters of policy, governance and finance.

Procedures

The President will serve a two year term of office and may not serve two consecutive terms. The Academy will elect its Vice President (President Elect and Deputy) a year in advance of the outdoing President. On completion of their term of office, the President will become a Board Member. The existing Vice President (President Elect and Deputy) will assume the role of new President supported by the incoming Vice President (President Elect and Deputy). Other members of the Academy’s Board will be elected to three year, overlapping terms.

The President will normally announce an election by indicating which offices will become vacant and request nominations for these positions. Each nomination must be made by a member of the Academy and seconded by, at least, one other member of the Academy. In addition a proposed candidate must agree to allow his or her name to be placed on the ballot.

All elections will be postal ballots of the entire membership. The results of any elections will normally be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy. However, a special election may be held at the discretion of the Board in order to fill an office which has been prematurely vacated.

The normal practice for filling casual vacancies for Members of the Board will be to offer the vacancy to the highest placed unsuccessful candidate in the immediately preceding election to serve for the remaining period of office of the retiring Member.
